Why girls quit sports and how to keep them playing
Girls drop out of sport at twice the rate of boys by fifteen. Organizers can change that with a few deliberate choices.

By the time they are fifteen, girls in India leave organized sport at roughly twice the rate of boys. The reasons are consistent across surveys: no safe or convenient place to play, no friends on the team, a sense that the programme is really for the boys, and pressure to focus on studies. Organizers cannot fix all of that, but the choices below move the numbers.
Make the timing and venue work for families
Late-evening slots at a ground with no lighting or transport rule girls out before they start. Weekend mornings, well-lit turfs, and a clear pickup point matter more than the coach's credentials.
Recruit in pairs
A girl who joins with a friend stays. Offer a "bring a friend" discount and put the pair on the same team. The registration form can ask "Who would you like to play with?"
Girls-only divisions at first, mixed later
A girls' division removes the fear of being the only one. Once the group exists, mixed formats work. Do not start mixed and hope.
Coaches who are women, visibly
Assistant coaches, umpires, and team managers who are women signal that the programme belongs to girls too. Put them on the poster.
Parents need information, not persuasion
Fixtures on a link, a consent form they can sign on the phone, fees paid by UPI with a receipt, and a WhatsApp announcement channel. Parents say yes to programmes they can see.
Celebrate participation and improvement
A points table for the league, and a "most improved" award alongside "best player". The girls who stay through the awkward middle years are the ones who feel their progress is noticed.
Keep the fees visible and fair
Sibling discounts and instalments keep a second child in the programme when money is tight. Make them easy to find, not something parents have to ask for.
