How to start an office sports league

Corporate cricket, box football, and badminton leagues that HR will fund and people will actually attend.

Office leagues work because the audience is captive and the calendar is predictable. They fail because nobody owns them. Here is how to make yours run.

Get a sponsor inside the company

HR or an engagement budget will usually pay for the ground and jerseys if you show a plan: dates, cost per participant, and how many people will take part. Bring a one-page proposal and a registration link.

Choose a format that fits after-work hours

Box cricket, 5-a-side football, and badminton doubles all fit in a two-hour evening slot. Six to eight teams from different departments, one match night a week, six weeks. Friday evenings or Saturday mornings work best.

Teams by department, not by skill

Mixed-ability teams from the same team or floor create the banter that keeps people coming. Let each team pick a captain and a name. Require at least two women per team if you want the league to feel like it belongs to everyone.

Registration in one link

Send a registration link on the company channel. Collect team name, players, jersey sizes, and a consent form. If the company pays, set the fee to zero and still make everyone register so you know who is playing.

Fixtures people can find

Publish the schedule to a link everyone can open on their phone. Add it to the shared calendar. When a match moves, change it in one place.

Score the same night

Post the points table the next morning on the company channel. Standings are what turn a one-off event into a league.

A finals evening

Book the last slot as a finals night with the two top teams, a trophy, and snacks. Invite the people who did not play. Take photos for the internal newsletter; that is next season's marketing.

Rotate the sport

Cricket in winter, badminton in the monsoon, football in spring. Same organizer, same registration link, a new season every quarter.
